Venice is a large overturned forest.
When walking in the calli or entering the Venetian palaces, few imagine that the buildings do not rest on classic foundations but on millions of wooden poles that were transported into the lagoon by raftsmen. It was the only way to build buildings on sand.

Tiziano Scarpa writes in his Venice is a fish: “Under the Basilica della Salute there are at least one hundred thousand, even at the foot of the Rialto bridge, to contain the thrust of the stone arch. The Basilica of San Marco rests on large oak rafts supported by an elm pile dwelling”. . . .
